I’ve been experimenting with various approaches to task management.
Vikunja
Didn’t like it, clunky interface, annoying to set up new tasks, especially recurring or scheduled tasks.
super productivity
what i’m using now for personal. Using a plugin, it syncs the file-based tasks folder using caldav (provided by Fastmail), which has worked well so far. Setup involves installing super productivity on a new device, installing that plugin, logging in using a fastmail application key, and the tasks sync down quickly. Seems good enough for my purposes. The app itself remains not one of my favorites, though.
tasks.org
maybe a nicer option, if not for the subscription. $1/year or whatever it is may not be enough to really matter, but it’s principle of it. If tasks.org shuts down I don’t know if that means I’m up the river or not. I’d rather just use something open source or paid one time.
However, since fastmail offers afree caldav server, it’s possible that tasks can be synced too as that’s part of the standard. I need to test that it works, and find a good set of clients for my devices.
todo.txt
I’ve been leaning more on CLI tools at work, and while previously I’ve tried various task managers to little success, currently i’m using todo.txt at work, using the tuxedo client. It has a clean, themable tui and good behaviors. Since I do all my work on my one laptop, this solution has worked well, and it’ll be easy to back up and transfer the plain text files when I need to update to a new laptop.
taskwarrior
Taskwarrior is interesting, I like it’s calculated prioritization system (and that you can customize the heuristics for it), but ultimately i found it clunky to use. The plain cli commands interface is a little too raw for my taste, and using the tui interface I found for it introduced some buggy behavior around recurring events. It also uses a taskwarrior-specific database file which is less than ideal, but at least it’s all local.
